NAME: ABOSEDE BLESSING
CONTESTANT NO: 15
When will Nigeria be good? When will this country develop? I am tired of this country. I am not a Nigerian any more. This country is dead; I would go overseas and be washing plates in a restaurant where I would be paid hourly or even be a mortuary attendant as long as I leave this country.
The above expressions reveal the minds of many Nigerians. Ripyen (not his real name) is one of such Nigerians. Their complaints and pessimism seems Nigeria’s existence is a history. Nevertheless, Timi Dakolo’s “Great Nation” inspires me that, Nigeria is a great country amidst all odds. I hold unto these two lines of his chorus… we’ll defend our land, we believe in this nation…..
Great people and nations of history did not attain their present statuses on a silver platter. There were challenges and struggles on the way. This is in agreement with the popular saying that “Rome was not built in a day.” For example, the United States of America is close to her 240th independence anniversary, while Nigeria is just 55. Moreover, colonialism affected Nigeria’s economy negatively like many other African countries as observed by Walter Rodney. In spite of this, we are hopeful that we will get there. I believe there is light for us at the end of the tunnel. As the saying goes, faith works wonders, and this I believe. I believe in a Nigeria full of peace, without tribal differences, without corruption, and better standard of living for its citizens.
We all have a major role to play in realizing the Nigeria of our dreams where good roads, employments, education for all, stable electricity, good health facilities and many more is feasible. This is because, Nigeria, our great country, is endowed with human and natural resource, a land filled with milk and honey and envied by many countries across the globe.
Ripyen and others, let’s be patient, hopeful and believe in our fatherland! If we fail to build our home, if we do not believe in our own country, who will? Nigeria is our home and will forever remain ours. “East, West, North or South, home is best.”
